Livelihood Programme

Restoring self-sufficiency
We believe that enabling people to work is the most important way that we can help improve peoples’ lives, once essential needs are satisfied. A proper job allows families to be supported, dignity and independence restored and means people can decide how best to allocate their resources to meet their specific needs. Getting affected people back to a starting point where they can take care of themselves is to a large extent all most people want.

How the programme operates
Our livelihood programme has expanded greatly since the tsunami. Funds have now been provided funds to dozens of small businesses and individuals. Funds are earmarked for specified income-generating asssets, whether machinery, tools, stock or materials. Projects are always selected using local knowledge and contacts, either through local/village associations and other similar bodies or on individual recommendation. Recipient requests are always thoroughly vetted, complete receipts of exactly how money is spent are mandatory for FoS and projects are followed-up to monitor progress.

Supported industries
Projects that FoS has supported come from a range of industries that reflect the nature of small business along the coastal strip around Galle. For example: tailoring and textile, iron working, dyeing, restaurants, food stalls, guest houses, garages, engine repair workshops, woodwork, handicraft, communications, photography, three-wheeler/taxi, retailers, shoe-makers, art gallery, bakery, and electrical.

Fishing industry
Much has also been done to help the local fishing community and related businesses, see Fishermen’s Friends.

Funds allocated
As at 30/6/2006 we have allocated Rs6.6m (approx US$68,000) to Livelihood Projects.
