Friends of the South has carried out a number of projects to help improve peoples’ homes. These range from the provision of brand new homes to materials and supplies to make existing homes better. For example:
Building three new homes in the Katugoda area. Selection and management of project carried out by the Katugoda Jamath Association, the community committee of the local mosque
Providing new roofing materials for fifteen homes in the Unawatuna area, in conjunction with the Unawatuna Cultural and Envirnomental Protection Association.
‘Back to Home’ packs. To ease the burden of returning to partially damaged homes and to assist with restarting lives ‘back to home’ packs consisting of cooking items; mosquito nets; table and chairs; kitchen utensils; bedding etc have been given to over 35 families. Amounting to Rs525,000 (USD5,357).
Clean water. In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami there was urgent need to clean water supplies to prevent the spread of disease and guarantee basic necessities to people. Friends of the South, in conjunction with Project Galle 2005, provided equipment and materials and cleaned out local wells and water supplies.
Funds allocated
Friends of the South have so far allocated Rs2,000,000 (approx US$20,000) to these projects.
