What is 'Friends of the South'?
Friends of the South (FoS) is a Sri Lankan charitable association based in Galle, incorporated in June 2004 under Sri Lanka law. We are entirely not-for-profit.

Near-zero admin costs?
Our organisation is managed on a completely voluntary basis and all admin expenses are offered free of charge, with the exception of legal compliance costs and the salary of our sri lankan operations officer. Otherwise all donations go straight to the needy.

Who runs FoS?
FoS is governed by a Board of Directors drawn from the local and expat communities. All decisions are taken at Board Meetings.
    • Robert Drummond (Chairman)

    • Jack Eden

    • Nasser Hussein

    • Ulla Maschberger

    • Olivia Richli (Secretary)

    • Bindu Wickramasekara

Local knowledge
The Sri Lankan directors are all from the Galle area and bring a huge wealth of experience and know-how to the way in which we carry out our work. The expat directors have lived for a total 30+ years in the area. This combined local knowledge and contact network means Fos is able to work effectively at grass-roots level and avoid many of the pitfalls common in carrying humanitarian work.

What does FoS do?
Prior to December 26th 2004 FoS carried out a variety of humanitarian work in Sri Lanka’s southern province.

Since the tsunami disaster, we have launched a broad fundraising appeal to help tackle the devastation left behind, and are working on short, medium and long-term projects to help alleviate suffering and get life back to normal. To learn more about our activities, click here.
